NowFuture : Spy Killer (Review)

Here's a new band from Montréal with a brand new EP, Spy Killer. They have crafted a story in their own style. Clearly they have a plan and they are bringing us in their madness.

Pat on the bass and Pete on the vocals, wrote the story of a man that hears Lucifer talking to him. The character then becomes vigilante going after criminals. On his journey he meets a woman that seems to become his partner in crime, but I guess we'll learn more later.

All 4 songs of Spy Killer are now available on bandcamp, a couple of videos are also available at the same time of the online release of the EP, that's how it feels to me that the project is already planned out.

The music is a unique mix of early metal with a punk vibe of the 90s. Steph's guitar is lyrical, always playing a melody not going for the 3 or 4 chords, it honestly reminds me of Banlieue Rouge. The Drum of Alex and the Bass by Pat are very strong, I feel that it's hard to really feel the strength of the rhythm section on an online recording, seems that the live music will bring justice to heavy they can be.

The lyrics of Pete are important for the reason that he tells us a story, and they connect the songs together. It's a story of evil, probably it's in all of us, is there hope or not at the end of this story? We'll learn more later. The narrative reminds me of what Annihilators and Iron Maiden do, but the comparison ends there, since they don't really take the same technical path. When it comes to the chorus I find they don't stand out as much, maybe it's intended, but they are easy to learn and it would be great for the crowd to sing them with the band at live shows, but the band seems to have experience in that field and will probably get the crowd involved in the narrative somehow.

They also bring the imagery of the old heavy metal album with the character in a straight jacket in a padded cell like Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot. The video (NSFW) for the song Sweat Lovin' Gone Bad portrays BDSM acts, like Nine Inch Nails did with the film Broken, see for yourself if that is something that you like in music videos, and I don't know if this is part of the vibe they want to give their album, since we only have part of the story, We'll see later what NowFuture has for us when they are ready to tell us more.

The band is starting and they got my curiosity and i would like to hear more from them, they seem to have something planned and I'll just wait to see where it goes.

Check them out if you like stories like old heavy metal bands, a punk rock guitar that gives the melody to the song and heavy rhythm section.
