Smirking Revenge : Disastearth (Review)

The band is releasing their first full album with all the rage they have. It's a different sound compare to their first EP, they are darker and it's amazing. The Montrealers are bringing us in their universe of destruction and their metal is death, sometimes black and they add their own progressive touch to it. The album starts with ritual drums and some schizophrenic whispers with the title song Disastearth. The music will follow connecting to the other songs and giving us a dark universe. The guitar of Roxanne Labonté is creative with some heavy chords and nice melodies that are transporting the listener in a world of powerful distortion, but she does not hesitate to bring some clean and melodic sound on the guitar adding variety and contrasts to the album.

The drumming of Joannie Gagnon is impressive, always there to add a beat that is fast or slow, with the changing rhythms. She has some strong passes that will give you the impression that the drum is also part of the melody. The bass of Gabrielle Bordeleau adds a groove to the music and brings some weight to the songs and also makes the moments of clean guitar heavier. The voice of Marie Claude Gosselin is powerful and intense and her growl is amazing in French or in English. The lyrics are about that dark corner inside of us that wants to come out. The first album of Smirking Revenge is dark and strong, they never settle for a set of riffs or for a catchy sound. The music keeps changing and the transitions are so smooth and everything blends very well. They have a great first album that is well mixed that has to be played to the maximum to really feel the heaviness if it. You can stream the Disastearth or get the CD via their bandcamp.
