The Duke Of Surl : Ham Radio (Review)

Duke Of Surl is the project of Will Brown, his latest album, Ham Radio is now available on King Pizza Records since March. This is a good old rock n' roll album imagined and revisited by the very talented Will. The songs are all very unique, you can feel that there's a sound and a feel that goes across the album, but the songs all have different beats and are varied. When you listen to the album from one end to the other you get to feel how fun the guy has when creating his music. I had a big smile going through the songs. The music is well mixed all the instruments are very well featured. The album is like a tribute to the old rock n' roll, from the 50's to the 70's. Musically, this is a beautiful experience, you have nice clean guitars, great sound effects and the best part, I think is the voice. Starting with the guitars you can hear it in all the songs of the album, but the song I would say displays the best performance is Look Who's Talking Too, the guitar is almost talking with the wah wah effect and the old school distortion, it reminded me of Jimi Hendrix, just grooving through the song. Ham Radio, the title song easily reminds you of Chuck Berry's guitar play.

Then there's the sound effects that he uses. In the song Phthalo Blue, it just makes a cool ambiance, the old beat that came with electric organs, just that with the voice a little melody from a synth, really simple, but effective, that is my favourite song. The voice of Will is great he does whatever he wants and it always sounds relax. All the songs are great you never get tired and the variety on the album is rich. Ham Radio is a fun album with lots of stuff, you get to hear different styles of rock n' roll and to me this a nice display of musical talent that does not focus on only one instrument, but the ability to create a diverse musical experience. If you are a fan of Bloodshot Bill, I think you should check it out. Also go on King Pizza Records find out if the album is still available. They will, also, perform in the States during the Fall season, the full band includes the talents of Will Brown, Sam Trioli, Paul Travisano, and Mike Fiorentino.
