The Mad Doctors : No Waves, Just Sharks (Review)
The Mad Doctors, from Brooklyn are back with a second LP, No Waves, Just Sharks. They have been busy coming out with splits for a while after a first album Snake Oil Superscience (2014). They also have an EP named Fuzz Tonic (2013). The Doctors are releasing their No Waves, Just Sharks on vinyl in 3 colours and the quantities are limited, King Pizza Records (my now favourite label name) has what you are looking for on their online store. The music of The Mad Doctors mixes lots of styles. What comes to my mind first, is old school rock n roll with a bit of surf in the tone of the guitar, a bit of b-movies in the lyrics and the little intros. It sounds like you just tuned in to an old horror radio show. The punk genre is also an easy reference, the weight of the bass also brings out a sludge sound. That's the best i can do, to try to explain how they sound, i think the best is that you check their songs, maybe you'll hear something else. So lots of sounds mixed up, but no worries, the music is real good. Lots of fuzz on the guitar and reverb in the voice. The guys have a good sense of entertainment always switching things around, the diversity of the sound males it's a great album. The sound is lo-fi, but it sounds good you don't miss anything from the songs. There's a lot of work put in the songs with all the added effects. The beat is fast, but sometimes it shifts to something slower more trippy,. They say doom, but it never feels dark. I actually have fun and enjoyed the songs. I was surprised when the album ended. I never got bored with No Waves, Just Sharks, I would have taken more from the Doctors. My favourite track is She's A Psycho, such a fun song with a nice melody, plus it's a tale of a killer women. No Waves, Just Sharks is now available through King Pizza Records. The Mad Doctors are unique in the way they mix different musical styles, their lo-fi sound full of fuzz and reverbs and the effects that create an old school vibe. Definitely go check them out and you might hear something that you will like in there. The Mad Doctors on facebook The Mad Doctors on bandcamp King Pizza Records on facebook
