Zine: La Peste #2
La Peste is a French/English feminist zine that was created by a group of women from Montreal that love to go to hardcore shows and didn’t feel they could enjoy the concerts like the guys, because… they are women? The zine was made to address the issues.
The first zine dealt with the gender issues in the scene and there were interviews with bands. The second number focused on other stuff. I felt there was something that came back a lot and it was the word ‘Shaming’ for all sorts of reasons that are in fact natural. That’s the society we live in. Can’t be different, we have to hide what’s not normal, not clean, not known. (sex worker, menstruation, kink)
I also enjoyed the art that was displayed. Great erotic drawings in simple lines, beautiful nude and not nude photos of women, I loved the cover art, a women on all four receiving cunnilingus. There’s also a list of vegan restaurants in Montreal and the connection between feminism and veganism. The text I enjoyed the most was a letter from a citizen of Richmond, Virginia, who was looking for women of colour to start a band, I would certainly listen to that and if that happens I want an interview, hope to hear from that person in another zine.
This zine is educational and a kick in the face. I’m glad that women are bringing these issues forward. And the zine looks great a bit old school, but also well done. There’s so much to talk about, can’t wait for them to come out with number 3.
